Saddhamangala Karunaratne Legacy Award

The Dr. Saddhamangala Karunaratne Legacy Award provides annual support to academic staff members in the departments of History or Archaeology of the University of Peradeniya pursuing studies in archaeology and related historical disciplines in Sri Lanka.

About the Legacy Award

The Dr. Saddhamangala Karunaratne Legacy Award is an annual award presented to a single recipient for the best scientific publication in the fields of history and archaeology, published in a peer-reviewed journal by an academic researcher in the Departments of History or Archaeology of the University of Peradeniya.

The award has a value of Rs. 100,000.00 and is granted annually to selected candidates based on scientific merit and demonstrated commitment to research in Sri Lankan historical studies.

The legacy award will be facilitated through the University of Peradeniya Alumni Association-USA (UPAA-USA).

Important Dates:
Nov 1st 2026: Application submission opens.
Dec 31st 2-26: Application submission closes.
1st week of March 2027: Award recipients will be notified.

Legacy Award Details

Eligibility Criteria

● Must be a current faculty member in the Departments of History or Archaeology of the University of Peradeniya and must be in the service of these Universities in active form (being in study leave is not eligible) at the time of application.

● The publication content should be original research articles in the disciplines of archaeology, epigraphy, Buddhist art, or related disciplines.

Required Documents

● A statement highlighting the ‘contribution to science’ from the selected publication (1 page limit; Arial 11 font; single-spaced)

● PDF copy of the scientific publication.

● A letter from the Department chair confirming the current affiliation and active service.

● All three components must be attached into a single PDF file and submitted via the submission portal.

Selection Process

● Applications are reviewed by a committee of academic professionals in archaeology and related disciplines, and the awardee will be notified following the review period.

● Applications will be reviewed by the Project Evaluation Committee of UPAA-USA, with the support of independent academic professionals in archaeology and related disciplines, and the awardee will be notified following the review period.
